What to expect

At Toastmasters, we provide a supportive and positive learning environment in which all members have an opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which result in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

Toastmasters members learn by attending club meetings, which are workshops where you will have the opportunity to study and practice communication and leadership skills with others who are there for the same reasons you are.

You will prepare and present 10 speeches from the Competent Communicator manual, from the first ‘Ice Breaker’ speech where you introduce yourself to the club, through to the Project 10 ‘Inspire your Audience’ speech, and beyond. The objectives of the speech increase in difficulty as you progress, where you will be expected to speak for longer, speak without notes, focus on using research, visual aids, vocal variety or hand gestures to convey your point, and generally become a more polished speaker.

All your speeches will be evaluated by another member, who will provide you with commendations and recommendations for improvement. This gives you the opportunity to develop yourself as you become more comfortable with speaking before an audience.

You will also have other roles during club meetings. You will develop ‘quick thinking’ skills as you give 1 to 2 minute impromptu speeches during Table Topics. You will develop evaluation skills as an evaluator of other speeches. You may be placed in other roles such as Grammarian, Hark Master or Timer. And as Toastmaster, you will be Master of Ceremonies of the meeting and introduce upcoming speakers.

You also have the opportunity to take on a hands-on role of steering the club by becoming a member of the Maylands Toastmasters committee, for the role of President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant-at-arms or Vice Presidents of Education, Membership or Public Relations.

Over 4 million people worldwide confirm that the Toastmasters program works, and by improving your communication skills, you will experience benefits in all aspects of your life.
