Toastmaster: Stephen Wilson
Our latest meeting was a “Speechathon” enabling our large membership to make inroads into progressing through their Competent Communicators Manuals.
Thanks and gratitude goes out to the Club’s VP of Education, Sean Gomes for organising the agenda for the evening. Sean has also recently passed his Motorcycle Licence Test on his first attempt.
The Club, as usual, was fortunate to have some new and repeat Guests join us who VP Membership Ann Cullen introduced and welcomed to the meeting. Ann does a lot of great work in answering inquiries and request for information from new members and the public. Thanks for your efforts Ann.
The speeches in the first half of the meeting started with Wendy Lim who gave her Ice Breaker and demonstrated the power of the question, “have you got a Dog?”, because one night Wendy had a Patient at her place of her work who was very unsettled at 1-00 in the morning until Wendy arrived, asked the question and the ensuing conversation from the affirmative answer was enough to reassure and calm down the patient. Well done Wendy.
Bikram Koirala gave us Competent Communicator Speech number Two and was able to weave in with great skill the joys of parent hood and family life and how in his case it originated at the behest of his family.
We then had a speech related to an aspect of Toastmasters skills that we all need to take heed of which is the art of listening. Sander Huijsen delivered his Speech number three masterfully and gave us all some very good lessons on his three step action plan to become a great listener.
After supper break Sean Gomes entertained us with a make believe and funny account of his time as an intern of the current President of the USA.
Another Competent Communicator Speech Number Two followed, this time by Inna Rozhnatovska questioned the differences between Digital and Traditional photography in our lives, something probably many of us had not thought of before.
We had a Birthday Girl on the night with us, our Sergeant- At-Arms Barbara Harrison who gave us an uplifting advanced speech on what her Toastmasters journey with the Maylands Club had meant to her.
Our two timers for the evening were Sze Howe Koh and Hossein Darvish who reported on our timekeeping for the evening.
Ann Cullen then gave her General Evaluation of the meeting offering commendations and recommendations for all involved throughout the evening. Thank you Ann and I promise to be less untidy at future meetings.
Our recently elected new President Matt Griggs conducted the Club Business by obtaining feedback from our Guests and reminding all of the upcoming Speech contests and then closed the meeting.
